Abstract

Abstract  Translator: The present text is a translation of the article “The Crest of the Peacock: Non-European Roots of Mathematics”, written by Clemency Montelle. He is senior lecturer of mathematics in the Department of Mathematics and Statistics at the University of Canterbury in New Zealand. The article is the review of George Gheverghese Joseph’s book, The Crest of Peacock. In Montelle’s view the book enjoys widespread popularity because it provides an accessible account of the mathematical culture of non-European peoples. He believes The Crest of Peacock covers an assortment of interesting aspects of the mathematical activity of selected early cultures with a minimum of technical details in a humanistic, undemanding way aiming to summarize the essence of technical scholarship that would otherwise be out of reach of the teachers and students of mathematics. Montelle believes that while Joseph passionately denounces the Eurocentric approach throughout his book, at times his authorial stance seems to perpetuate the divisions caused by this hegemony. He gives some instances of this contradiction. Montelle, also, discusses in detail some ambiguities in the book such as the issues of dating as well as the bibliography. As a whole, to Montelle, the book is important and effective, since it gets the mainstream audience to know the history of mathematics and gives them a taste of early mathematical cultures of inquiry.
