Abstract  Translator: This article is a translation of conversation between a Japanese leading mathematician, Toshiyuki Kobayashi, and the chairman of Toyota Motor Corporation, Fujio Cho. This conversation, along with some other conversations among Japanese mathematicians and business leaders of top Japanese companies, is collected in a book entitled \What Mathematics Can Do for You" which published in 2013 by Springer Publishing.

The relation of mathematics to other fields of sciences is highly regarded, as the articles and several books to explain and clarify the role of mathematics in chemistry, physics, economics, engineering and other industries developed and published. The aim of the book \What Mathematics Can Do for You", which the first chapter of this book is translated in this article, is an attempt to ask business leaders of top Japanese companies for their thoughts on mathematics. Also, people who have had the responsibility of the interviews, are the greatest mathematicians of Japan (and the world) who have played a decisive role in pure and applied mathematics.
