Analysis of factors influencing the attitudes of arts students towards mathematics

Abstract

This research aimed to investigate the reasons for the declining interest of arts students in learning mathematics and to provide necessary solutions. In this study, 155 undergraduate students from the Islamic Azad University of Tabriz were selected, and after collecting data through a questionnaire, the data were analyzed using SPSS software and appropriate tests. The research results indicate that among the university's entrants, girls have a stronger scientific foundation than boys, and after entering university, girls' academic performance is better than boys', and their level of learning mathematics courses is also higher than boys'. Additionally, the results show that students' interest in learning mathematics courses is declining, and factors such as awareness of the importance of mathematics and its applications in their field of study, students' opinions and statements, the level of learning mathematics in high school, GPA, and the decline in academic level have a positive effect on the interest in university mathematics courses. However, there is a negative correlation between interest in mathematics courses and the volume and level of topics covered in the syllabus of mathematics courses, and the existing syllabus is not proportional to the fields of study.
