Motivation in mathematics education

Abstract

In this article, after exploring Newman's perspective on problem-solving and referring to Newman's hierarchy, the issue of motivation as one of the effective factors in this method is discussed. According to the author, the following are the most important factors that lead to students' lack of motivation in learning and solving mathematical problems: insufficient skills of teachers in using various methods and techniques and how to teach them, not familiarizing students with the importance of mathematics, leaving the territory of the goals of the mathematics lesson unknown, uniformity in teaching mathematics, using old and traditional teaching methods, non-standard evaluation criteria, ignoring students' interests, and not considering their mental and intellectual abilities, and making mathematics appear difficult in their perspective. Certainly, other factors, such as the role of the family, the school environment, etc., can be mentioned, which are not addressed in this article. However, efforts have been made to examine influential theories in creating and intensifying motivation for teaching and solving mathematical problems, and methods and solutions have been presented with the hope that their implementation will improve the quality of mathematics education.
